2011/12/09 – Joel Mandelbaum Concert

I joined the Queens College faculty in 1961. On Friday, December 9th at 7:30 P.M. I shall mark the 50th anniversary of my becoming part of its Music Department (now School) with a concert. The concert will feature works that were performed at the college during my first years there, which I remember fondly but which have not been heard there since. These include Hugo Weisgall’s Soldier Songs (3 of the 9 will be sung by Rob Weintraub): Karel Rathaus’ Five Moods to American Poets (2 will be sung by Kathryn Wieckhorst); and Luigi Dallapiccola’s Piccola Musica Notturna (the chamber version, commissioned by and dedicated to Queens College—conducted by Charles Neidich). The Partita from that era by Leo Kraft will be played by Donald Pirone. In addition, the first work of mine to be performed at Queens College will be sung by the Queens College Choir, and one or two other pieces of mine will be included. We will try to evoke the sense of the Queens College Music Department of 50 years ago and joggle our memory for its legacy toward the present. I would be delighted to have you share in this occasion with me, at Lefrak Concert Hall in the Music Building at Queens College.
